It was a quiet night in Rome after Spain beat Italy 4-0 in the Euro Cup Finals, but regardless of the disappointment of the locals, we all enjoyed sharing a meal together during the game and then walking past all of the beautifully illuminated ancient Roman ruins on our way back to the hotel. Over the following days, we braved the heat, waking up early in an attempt to beat the midday sun to the Colosseum, Forum, and Vatican, where we learned about everything from gladiatorial fights to art and architecture and religious history. At night, we climbed the Spanish Steps, looking out over the rooftops and passersby- the city of Rome appeared so serene from this vantage point. And we would always end up at the Trevi Fountain at least once every evening without fail; it’s grandeur never diminishing. On the last night we indulged in a five course Farewell Dinner, and I have to admit that I teared up when it was time to bid my roommate, Gabrielle, adieu, before she got on a domestic flight to visit her family in Sicily, while we continued on to the international terminal.
Now that I have been home for a couple of days and have finally caught up on my sleep, I have begun to realize that assimilating back into my home culture has been a slight adjustment; one that I did not think I would have to make. For example, I am now used to eating at a later time than my Mom and sister, and it has also been strange only speaking one language. But as good as it feels to be home, my study abroad trip was such an indelible experience, and I will remain forever grateful to everyone who made it possible, as well as to all of my new friends who made it so unforgettable! The only query I am left with is how soon I can return! A presto!
