Dominica: Waitukubuli “Tall is Her Body”

Submitted by Amanda Binning on the 2016 winter session program in Dominica sponsored by the Department of Geography…

After being in Dominica for three weeks, I have had the chance to experience more on this island than most natives have. On Friday,I made it to the top of Morne Diablotin, the tallest mountain in Dominica. The trail we hiked was one segment on the Waitukubuli national trail. Waitukubuli, the original name for the island of Dominica, translates to “tall is her body” which is an accurate description of the mountainous terrain. It took around three and a half hours to hike to the top and when we arrived we were greeted by clouds. This hike wasn’t even a hike it was more of climb through branches and rock and we were nose to nose with nature. This hike made me realize the capability humans have to adapt and withstand the environments in which we are placed. After this, I am look forward to the “smaller” hikes to come.
