Riga, Latvia

Submitted by Mallory Smith on the 2014  fall semester DIS (Denmark’s International Study Program) program in Copenhagen, Denmark…

On Sunday night, I returned from a very long week of travel. My class traveled to Riga, Latvia where I studied their public health system in regards to mental health, HIV/AIDs, and sexual health. Then we went to Helsinki, Finland where we looked at how their health care system runs, different public health initiatives they are implementing, and had the opportunity to talk to general practitioners about their role in a health care system where they have approximately 1,000 patients each.

It was incredibly interesting to learn about these different health cultures and policies and to have  the knowledge to compare them to the United States and Denmark.

After Helsinki,  a few friends and I flew over to Sweden to explore the streets of Stockholm. It was absolutely charming. I don’t know if a better word could describe it. Everywhere you went, it was hard not to look at the colorful homes and cobblestone roads and not smile! My friends and I explored the Noble Prize Museum and the Photography Museum which were two of the most well-done and interesting museums I have ever visited (if you ever make it to Stockholm you have to go)!

Last weeks classes went by quickly since I had multiple presentations and papers due and this week I have two midterms as well. It is easy to get work done because it is so interesting, but sitting in a cafe on a sunny day when you know there is a beautiful park to explore makes it slightly more difficult.

Have en god dag! (Have a good day)
