The Alhambra

Submitted by Ana Lopez Magana on the 2014 spring semester study abroad program in Granada, Spain…

This week it rained three days and the temperatures dropped a little bit. Some of our activities were canceled because of this; however, the highlight of the week was definitely our visit to the Alhambra.

The Alhambra is a palace and fortress. It’s located on the top of a hill called Sabika. It served as the home to the last Muslim empire in Granada, Spain and to the Catholic Monarchy. It has also served as an inspiration to many poets, musicians, and writers such as, Washington Irving.

The Alhambra is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been to.  Walking around this place was just an amazing experience. The view from the Torre de la Vela (Watch Tower) is amazing. You can see the entire city from up there.  We also visited the Palacio de Generalife, which served as a summer gateway for the Catholic Monarchy. The Palacio de Generalife is beautiful and I want to go back during the spring to admire all of its beautiful roses and flowers. Our next visit to the Alhambra will be in March to see the palace of Charles V. I cannot wait!
