Free Days in Florence

Submitted by Nicholas Davis on the 2024 Winter FINC/ENGL program in Italy…

After leaving our campus in Volterra, it was time for 3 days in Florence. From country to city, what a change of pace! In the country, nothing but hills, but in the city, nothing but steps. I think in the year 2024 I am most thankful for my comfy Nike shoes. Streets flooded with market vendors, restaurants booming with study abroad students/affordable pizza, and beautiful sights to see, if you know the right places. When we first got to the hotel, 33 students had to carry their suitcases to the third floor. Remember what I said? Steps. Steps. Steps. It was no surprise that when I climbed the Duomo, I was ill prepared physically. As soon as you gained entrance, a tight stairwell awaited you. No way to look out, stairs behind and in front of you. For those that are claustrophobic, you’d be setting yourself up for failure. After mustering the courage to push through (which was my only option), the view was so worth it. Cathedrals and bell towers piercing the sky, gorgeous vineyards in the distance, and a gloomy fog over the mountains. I’d recommend going early, which ensures less tourists, since they’re all trying to get espressos and fit into the italian norm. Also, do not go when it’s raining, it kind of ruins the view and limits your perception of the sheer beauty of Florence. One thing that I did learn about Florence heavily was that every shop on the market strip is bargain central. Never ever settle for the price they tell you! State your price, and if they don’t agree, walk away. *They will come chasing after you with the number you suggested. Just remember, that you can always politely exit when they get too pushy, there are tons of people just like you for them to sink their talons into. Florence was a great experience, as I got to see the speedy life of an Italian city, and enjoy some of the best cuisine I’ve ever gotten the privilege to try. (Submitted on January 19, 2024)
