Having lived in London for 11 days now, it’s time to bust some study abroad myths regarding this cosmopolitan city and explain the importance of this myth-busting.
1. Fiction: It is constantly raining.
Fact: I have been in London for 11 days and it hasn’t rained more than a quick drizzle once. My rain boots have been collecting dust in the closet.
2. Fiction: London’s winters are brutally cold.
Fact: It’s not that cold. I’ve faced colder winters in New York.
3. Fiction: The English are mean.
Fact: They’re nicer than most people I’ve met in other American cities.
4. Fiction: The food is disgusting in London.
Fact: London is a global city with a variety of foods to choose from. It’s all about finding what you like!
Now, this may all be subjective, however, what is truly important is that we recognize the importance of combating stereotypes while preparing to study abroad. Going to live in a brand new city with preconceived notions about what life will be like for you is daunting and more often than not, unrealistic. You may be pleasantly surprised, but it is best not to set yourself up for disappointment. I’ve found that the key to studying abroad is to go into things with an open mind and allow yourself the opportunity to learn flexibility. Not only will it prove to be an asset in your new home, but it will work wonders in your future occupation and everyday life.
