France: Fashion Week – An Unique and Unforgettable Experience

Submitted by Aliza Vacca on the 2020 winter session study abroad program in Paris, France sponsored by the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies…

Last week, I was able to participate in fashion week for both the men’s show and the couture show. I spent time dressing models and watching several shows during the week. This was such an eye-opening and new experience for me. Being able to engage with the designer and the models was so exciting to be a part of. When we were backstage, I often had two looks that the model had to change into. These were often quick changes and had to take less than two minutes. This was stressful as I often had three other people’s hands around me trying to help, but I was able to dress every model for my show on time and without a mistake. An important take away is that by being backstage you don’t only appreciate the collection more, you can also see the dedication and time that the team and designer have put into making sure the dresses go out looking perfect. There are last minute tweaks and changes and everyone is always running around, but in the end it comes together for a great show that the audience enjoys. Being in the audience was also a unique experience because you see the models walking in the garments and there is usually cool music, effects, and a beautiful venue. All together, fashion week was an unique and unforgettable experience that enhanced my understanding of fashion and gave me memories to last a lifetime.
