Italy: Two Different Cities

Submitted by Matthew Kaminstein on the 2020 winter session study abroad program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Finance and the Department of English…

Another week has been completed in Italy and it is evident that two weeks in Europe can really change your perspective! We finished up our first campus location in Volterra this week, which was an amazing experience in the heart of Tuscany and immersing myself into a brand new culture. Some of the highlights of the first leg of the program included spending time in a smaller, Italian city and getting to experience what it’s like to operate in a small, tightly-knit community.

On Thursday, the second leg of our program started in Florence, and it was a vastly different setting than Volterra. Not only is Florence a major city with thousands more people, but the city has a magical vibe to it. While walking around the city, it gave off a feel of a major city in the United States, with luxury stores lining the streets. However, what makes it so unique and special is the mix of a modern city and Renaissance feel, as the massive cathedral and Baptistery are located in the heart of the city and 15th century statues line the street. To be truthfully honest, the city of Florence seems like something out of a movie and has only added further to the study abroad experience!
