Italy: No Target

Submitted by Julia Bachar on the 2020 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Philosophy…

Week one in Italy is coming to an end, and I am so amazed by the beauty and history here in Rome. There is not a large language barrier, as every worker/waiter I have encountered has spoken English, which has been super convenient. In my week here, I have been deeply immersed in the culture of Italy and overwhelmed with educational and interesting experiences. So far, we have toured the Catacombs, the Coliseum, the Vatican and many other things that have left me in complete awe and allowed me to gain further knowledge on the city of Rome.

So far, the only problem I have encountered is wanting to buy flip flops for the shower, but not being able to find them anywhere. I have realized that the stores here in Rome are smaller than in the States and do not have as large of a selection of things. There is no Target right down the street like at home. Another difference that threw me off is that at restaurants in Italy you have to pay for both your water and bread on the table, and most of the time you do not tip waiters. In all, I am loving my experience so far and am learning how to consistently remain positive and enjoy everything that is happening.
