I had heard before leaving the United States that Spain had amazing churros that I had to try at least once while I was there. One night while talking with our host mom, I asked her about one cafe I had read about that supposedly had good churros. She told us they were okay ,but not the best, and recommended we visit El Gran Cafe Bib-Rambla. Upon getting there, we met the nicest staff, who although they spoke English, we tried to speak only Spanish to. The churros were delicious, but very different from American churros. They lacked the cinnamon and sugar usually found on churros back at home. Instead, we dipped the plain dough into hot chocolate, which was much thicker than the way hot chocolate is made at home. Either way, it was an absolutely delicious snack.
The best part of the experience at Gran Cafe Bib-Rambla was the staff. Later that same afternoon, we returned to meet friends for some tapas. All the waiters remembered us from that morning and greeted us. They joked with us, and everyone we have met there has been nothing, but amazing. Unlike the States, the servers here are not relying on tips to make their money, so they do not have to be as friendly as they are in America. This shows the genuine kindness of the servers we have met. My roommate and I have already returned there again, and plan to continue. We see it as our “spot” already. Hopefully, we will be ordering like locals before we know it.
