Italy: Reflecting in Rome

Submitted by Marisa O’Connor on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Art…

Sadly, our time in Italy has come to an end. This week, we left Florence and spent some time in Rome before heading back to America. It was amazing to see Italy’s capital city and its notable monuments like the Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain and many other beautiful buildings.

It was interesting to note the differences between Florence and Rome. Rome is a much bigger city than Florence with much more traffic and a lot more people. After spending so much time in Florence, we almost felt homesick being away from it. Our time in Rome was very exciting and eventful, and this visit was a great way to end our program.

On the last night of our program, we left our hotel and walked to the Trevi Fountain to appreciate the beauty of Italy one last time before leaving. We sat and looked at the Trevi Fountain while reflecting on our experience, all of the things we had seen, and memories we have made.

I am so incredibly grateful for this experience. It was life-changing to embrace another country’s culture, explore its cities, and see beautiful sites everyday for a whole month. I now have a deeper appreciation and understanding of Italian culture and I would love to travel to other countries and immerse myself in their cultures in the same way.
