South Africa: Seals And Penguins

Submitted by Sara Cannizzaro on the 2019 winter session study abroad program South Africa sponsored by the School of Nursing…

We have had a fun filled first few days!! We had a long 24 hours of traveling, but being with friends made the trip go so much faster! We made the most of airplane food and no sleep, and once we arrived in Cape Town it was so worth it! The first night we went to a market for dinner to watch the sunset. We were all exhausted, but our teachers insisted we stay awake to regulate our sleep schedules – South Africa is seven hours ahead of Delaware! We  were so excited to see Cape Town and we had an amazing dinner and watched the sunset!

We also went to Seal Island to see the seals, and the Cape of Good Hope which is the southwestern most part of Africa! We hiked all the way up to a lighthouse to see it.

We also went to Boulder Beach to see the penguins where we were all afraid of them trying to bite us! Everyone made it out with no injuries and was able to embrace how beautiful the beach was.

Even though we’ve had so much fun, we’ve learned so much! In class we’ve discussed race, women’s health, and the differences between health care in South Africa and the United States. Everyone is looking forward to working in the clinics and learning from all of the nurses here. We all chose a topic and presented on it as a way to prepare for clinical placements here. We are all hoping to embrace the culture and learn as much as we can.
