England: Going To The Movies

Submitted by Madeline Schmid on the 2018 fall semester study abroad program in London, England…

September 22: I experienced a British movie theater! I am a huge fan of going to the movies so I was thrilled to see that there’s a theater right inside the Westfield Mall only a ten minute walk away. It was interesting to see the differences in the UK versus US theater experience. To start, a discounted student ticket was about $16. And no, the seats aren’t big, comfy recliners. Second, it was PACKED. Granted, it was a Saturday afternoon and we were seeing Crazy Rich Asians, but I can’t even remember the last time I sat in a packed movie theater – it was probably for the midnight premier of a Star Wars movie. Lastly, the audience was so reactive. Laughing, gasping, crying.. mostly laughing. All in all, Crazy Rich Asians was probably one of the best movies I have seen in a while and despite the differences, I know I’ll be back at the theater soon.
