Arriving in Italy, it was good to be back in this beautiful country. I have not been to Italy since 2012, so I was excited to see how much has changed since being here. My group met and we ventured off to the campus where we are staying. It was great getting to know everyone on the program as they will be the people closest to me for the next month. The first night we were all shocked with the meal. There were about six rounds of food starting with the appetizer then ending with meat. This was a shock because none of us were used to that much food and for that length of time.
One of my favorite parts so far has been when we saw the Tower of Pisa. I saw it when I was younger and it was interesting getting a different perspective now that I am older. I’ve noticed that it is definitely more tourist-driven then I remember. We also were allowed to walk around Siena for the day by ourselves, trying different foods. I had my first experience of gelato in Siena. We also got to see the Epiphany celebration where a witch descends from a tall building and hands kids candy and gifts, as this is a very important day for Italians. So far, the program has been amazing and I am excited to see what happens next!
