Week 6

Submitted by Hannah Scheck the 2024 Spring program in Sydney, Australia…

This week I had the privilege of checking out some of the best Museums in Sydney. First, I went to the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney. It was very informative. There were artifacts from Ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt. I saw mummies, tombs, painted vases, sculptures, and a diagram of Pompeii made completely out of legos! Next, I went to the Maritime Museum. While there, I learned about the different kinds of boats and their histories in Sydney. I was also able to see undersea photography and learn about the different sea creatures in Sydney. Then, I moved on to the Museum of Sydney. Here, I learned a lot about the Opera House. I learned about the creation, building, different performances, different costumes, different stage layout, different design features, and I got to see a diagram of the Opera House made out of legos! I also learned about the aboriginals and some of the colonization history. From there, I went to the Museum of Contemporary art. Here, I saw beautiful paintings and photographs done by different Australian artists. Continuing on the art path, I made my way to the Art Gallery of NSW. The gallery was huge. I saw many paintings, sculptures, and different art exhibits. They were all very beautiful and meaningful. Finally, I ended my museum tour at the Australian Museum. This was by far my favorite. This museum has Egyptian artifacts, wildlife history, an entire room dedicated to information about the dinosaurs, a room specifically for learning about Australian animals, and a room dedicated to education about minerals. Each of these museums has something setting them apart from the others, but they were all fascinating and informative. I am very glad I was able to see all of them. (Submitted on February 22, 2024)
