Navigating the Tube

Week 1

Navigating the Tube

I was born and raised in Delaware which is infamously lacking in public transportation. Growing up, I did not have much experience taking buses or trains to get around my hometown. Many activities were saved for the weekend when my mom could drive me there.

On the other hand, the city of London is run by the underground railway, known as the ‘tube’. My first week in London I rode the tube almost a dozen times. The flexible hours allow me to get anywhere I want in the city in less than no time. I’m not going to lie, it took me a couple tries to get the hang of it. The tube has 11 different lines so it is easy to get lost. Luckily, the app Citymapper is very useful in giving the most efficient routes. Still, navigating the tube station in itself is a challenge as well. I always have to remind myself to stand on the right side of the escalator so people can walk by on the left. I made the mistake of standing in the middle of a step on the escalator and was quickly pushed to the rail.

All in all, the tube has been an excellent introduction to the city of London. I still get lost every now and then, but I’m confident I will pick it up in less than no time.
