Exploring the Beaches of Sydney

Submitted by Jake Kalinowski the 2024 Spring program in Sydney, Australia…

So far in Sydney, as I am approaching my first month living in this wonderful city, I have had more alone time than I had anticipated. As it turns out, I really enjoy my time alone as it pushes me to step outside of my comfort zone and explore new places. I have been loving heading to a new beach each warm and sunny day and seeing what I make of it. So far, I’ve already been to 11 of Sydney’s splendid beaches. There are still many more I would love to visit, including Palm Beach and the walk from Watsons to Rose Bay.

Living in this marvelous city, I have learned how to use and become comfortable with taking the public transportation including the bus, light rail, and train. I used to be anxious about traveling alone but now I feel comfortable doing it. Through exploring new beaches and coastal walks, I have gained more independence which is a goal of mine for 2024.

One of my favorite beaches I have explored in Sydney is called Mackenzie’s Bay. It is close to Bondi Beach which is one of Sydney’s most popular beaches. I was at Bondi and saw a sign for a coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte Beach and decided to go for it. I’m glad I did. It was a breathtaking walk hugging the cliffs, passing beaches along the way. One of them is called Mackenzie’s Bay.

Mackenzie’s Bay is a quaint beach tucked in between two cliffs. It is a little bit of a trek to get down, but it is easily one of the most magical places I have been to in Sydney. This beach is special because it allows dogs so many people bring their pets. I was laying down and every so often dogs would come up and hop over me. I like that this beach is calm and there are not many people there so it’s very peaceful. (Submitted on February 14, 2024)
