Submitted by Sydney Moreno the 2024 Spring program in London, England…
After a full two weeks being in the beautiful, concrete jungle of London, it was time to take a trip out into the countryside of England to visit a very special set of stones. I’m talking about Stonehenge!
I have spent years learning about Stonehenge in a variety of my different classes, whether that be about how it was made, what it was originally used for, or what it means to the people who live around the area. Walking up to the stones, my breath was truly taken away. As the cliche goes, pictures never do anything justice, and in the end, I have to agree. The stones are beautiful, and they create a looming presence over the empty land around them.
The path around the stones is set up in a way that keeps viewers a fair distance away from the stones themselves, and I later learned that this is due to the soft and sensitive ground the surrounds the stones. During certain times of year, the ground underneath the stones is weaker, so visitors are not allowed to get any closer, in case the ground would cave in and damage the structure and placement of the stones.
Overall, this was a beautiful experience, being able to see Stonehenge for the first time. You always dream about seeing something you have learned about in real life, and Stonehenge did not disappoint! (Submitted on February 5, 2024)
