This picture was taken on the podium of the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Greek Olympic games were held. The stadium holds around 15,000 people. This number was generated by taking the size of an average person and calculating how many “average people” could fit in the stadium. The main event of the first modern olympics was stadion. This was a short sprint that was approximately one straightaway. They decided that this was not long enough, so they ended up adding longer and longer races. As a class, we ran a lap around the track to get a feel for what the athletes experienced!
