Last Week in Sorrento

Traveling to the Amalfi Coast

Submitted by Sofia Sacchetti on the 2024 Winter CGSC/LING program in Italy

I cannot believe that it has already been 2 weeks since we arrived in Sorrento. This truly is such a wonderful place. We have made so many new memories and gotten to know so many amazing people both as a part of this program as well as others.

Since the last time I wrote, we visited Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius. Exploring Herculaneum was so fascinating because it is not as well known as Pompeii, but still was badly affected by the eruption in 79AD. Instead of being covered by ash and preserved by Pompeii, Herculaneum was closer to the volcano, so everything was carbonized. It was interesting to compare the ruins to the ones we saw in Pompeii. After exploring the ruins, we took a bus towards the top of Mount Vesuvius and then hiked the rest of the way all the way up to the crater. The view was so amazing I don’t think I would be able to describe it in words. The pictures don’t even do it justice.

Pizza we made in Naples (The best I ever had)

Additionally, we got to take a bus to the Amalfi Coast which was another type of beautiful. We got to take pictures of the view along the way as we passed the coast and Positano. Our group got to visit many amazing shops in Amalfi where I got to buy a few souvenirs for friends and family and tried an incredible lemon flavored sorbet.

We also took a trip to Naples, where we made pizza and took an underground tour that dates back almost 3000 years! The pizza was the best I had ever had and the underground tour was really amazing to see.

Our group travels to Rome next where we will be staying for 9 nights! I am so excited to visit and explore around the country’s capital. (Submitted on January 21, 2024)
