Excursion to Crete

On our day off in Athens, we took a 50 minute flight to Crete for some hiking. There were some gorgeous views!

These two pictures accurately reflect our 24-hour cameo in Chania, Crete. We spent both days hiking, and we may have accidentally created some of our own paths while rock climbing… We climbed an equivalence of 164 flights of stairs, but it was so worth it to see some of the most gorgeous views of the Aegean Sea, the sunset, and the gorges. We learned about Old Town in Chania, which featured a synagogue. We also learned that Crete was one of the last territories of Greece to be surrendered to Germany during World War II. The people fled to the southernmost point of the island, where they were eventually thrown out of their own country. It was very interesting to learn that while Crete is part of Greece, it has its own unique history. Crete is definitely one of the most eye- catching sites of Greece, and although I have only seen a fraction of its true beauty, I would highly recommend visiting if you ever get the chance!
