Submitted by Alexis Hess on the 2024 Winter NURS program in the British Virgin Islands…
Prior to arriving in the British Virgin Islands, I harbored concerns about adapting to the local culture and way of life. However, upon my arrival, those worries quickly dissipated. The people of the BVI proved to be incredibly welcoming and friendly—some of the nicest individuals I’ve ever encountered. Everyone went out of their way to ensure I felt at ease, especially in town and within the hospital, where nursing students like myself were warmly embraced.
During our initial week, we explored the main island of Tortola and embarked on a boat excursion for snorkeling, providing a glimpse of the breathtaking coral reef and its vibrant marine life. As we enter the second week, our focus shifts to clinicals in various hospital specialty units, including the ICU, ER, NICU, women’s health, med surg, and behavioral health units. This experience not only enhances our understanding of the nursing field but also exposes us to diverse ways of life and their impact on health.
Peebles Hospital, the largest hospital in the BVI, serves patients from different islands across the BVI and even those arriving on cruise ships seeking medical care. These initial weeks have proven to be an invaluable experience, one that I will cherish forever, carrying the knowledge gained into my future nursing career. (Submitted on January 10, 2024)
