Dining in Paris has been a unique experience and is certainly different from the United States. When you arrive at the restaurant, or anywhere in France for that matter, you have to be sure to greet with a “Bonjour!”. A French meal consists of drinks, an appetizer, a main course, a cheese course, and a dessert. Although, you don’t need to order this every time you are in a
restaurant. They often offer “snacks” in the afternoon to be served with coffee or wine. Unlike the United States, the servers make a higher wage, so there is no need to leave a tip unless you would like to leave a few dollars or so. While you are there, your server wants you to be comfortable and stay a while. The French believe that meals should be enjoyed and to take your time eating, drinking and talking with friends and family. This is very different from the U.S. where good service is fast service. In the beginning, I found myself finishing my meal and leaving before the people who were there before me! I have learned to take more time, enjoy the scenery, talk with new friends, and enjoy trying new foods. (Submitted on January 9, 2024)
