It’s week 3 in London, and we started the week by exploring the Tower of London, which is conveniently right around the corner from our flats. It’s weird to see old stone architecture next to modern glass buildings, but it’s a nice reminder of London’s history. We got to see the Crown Jewels, which were so gorgeous and sparkly, I could have stared at them for hours. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take photos, so you’ll have to take my word for it. The Tower of London is also known for its raven guardians. The myth says that Charles II was advised that if the 6 ravens left the Tower grounds, the kingdom and the Tower of London would fall. Today, they have some super sweet, trained ravens roaming around who are not afraid to come up and say hello to you.
My favorite museum from this week was the Victoria & Albert, or the V&A. A unique part of the museum was its Cast Courts, which are large rooms filled with casts of famous sculptures and architectural feats. Trajan’s Column (split in two) and Michelangelo’s David are highlighted. What is so neat about these casts is that they provide museumgoers with the same experience as seeing the real pieces in person while standing in the same spot. This method of display, in my opinion, is a lot more ethical and impressive.
We had the best Thai food at The Pepper Tree in Clapham Common! Our professor showed us this spot, as he’s been coming to it with the study abroad students every summer, and the hype was worth it. My chicken pad thai was delicious, and I had the best time trying the dishes my friends got.
My friends and I also visited Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard, and despite going early in the week, it was still super crowded. The presentation was impressive, and we were shocked to find out that some of the palace guards were as young as 16 years old!
I’m excited to see what new adventures come in the next 2 weeks before we leave.
