Submitted by Haley Ryan on the 2023 summer program in Ireland…
Upon arrival in the busy city of Dublin, it struck me at that moment that anything was possible. My first week in Ireland has been an amazing and life-changing experience. Although I have experienced culture shocks in areas such as transportation, and the way the Irish love to joke with Americans, Dublin has been one of the warmest and most welcoming cities I have ever traveled to.
Our first week was filled with excursions such as touring the college we are accommodated at (Trinity College Dublin), multiple churches, including the Christ Church and St Patrick’s Church, and castles such as Malahide and Dublin. The churches, museums, and castles are filled with interesting history that is sometimes not mentioned in courses that are offered in the States. Being a history major and traveling to Ireland has been an unforgettable experience considering not only can I trace my ancestry back to Ireland, but because I have spent years studying Irish history, and there is nothing like being able to experience Irish history in real life.
Along with being in absolute love with the historical atmosphere of Dublin, the social culture of Dublin is amazing. Everyone has been so open and welcoming to my friends and me, and the music, food, and service are like that in the States. As a server in the restaurant industry, it has been hard not “tipping” my server, considering back home, that is ultimately how I make my income, so that was a shock. I haven’t felt in danger or as if I’m being followed once since being here, and the locals are warm and willing to share “hidden gems” with my friends and me.
It has only been a week, and Dublin is beginning to feel like home. (Submitted during Week 1)
