Spain: Balancing Act

Submitted by Jade Schlegel on the 2022 spring semester program in Madrid, Spain…

This week in Madrid, the schoolwork has definitely made itself apparent and is making me better understand the study aspect of study abroad. When arriving in Madrid, the first 2 weeks of the semester felt much more like a vacation. There were lots of trips and the school work was easy as it was only the drop/add period. There was also a lot to learn about being in a foreign country. But, the drop/ add period has ended so the work has begun to pick up.
Homework is taking more time and exams will be beginning shortly. Yet, the trips are still happening and there is a lot to explore. Madrid is a huge city! There are so many things you will be told you have to do. Ask locals and each time you may hear some repeats, but there will be a new place they recommend to see. Even outside of Madrid, there are so many cities close by that are amazing spots to take day trips. With this, the balance of school work and travel has become very important. My personal schedule allows me to have Fridays off which has been amazing as I get an extra day to travel and explore. But with this, the long weekend can make it hard to remain motivated to do school work. I’ve learned that finding a good study spot is so important to help get work done. Personally, the library is my favorite and helps me stay focused to get work done. Learning the balance of work and school is crucial being abroad. School is very important, but there is also a very valuable learning experience in understanding the country you live in.
