Italy: Immersed Into International Health Care

Submitted by Carly Coulombe on the 2022 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the College of Health Sciences…

The city of Trieste is absolutely breathtaking, but the most outstanding part lay in my experiences in the Italian hospitals. Although my time here in Italy is just beginning, I have witnessed countless surgeries that have entirely changed my perspective on medicine. My first assignment was orthopedic surgery, and from what I have observed, my love for this specialty has grown tremendously. From doctor to nurse, the staff here has been immensely welcoming. As for the residents and medical students, we find joy in explaining how medical schooling relates and differs between our two home countries. Overall, in my first week in Trieste, my love for medicine has grown more and more by the day, and I am beyond excited to see what else my journey will offer me. Ciao!
