Italy: Forming New Friendships in Florence

Submitted by Alexis Dempsey on the 2022 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the Department of English…

Signing up for this study abroad program has been one of the most incredible and rewarding experiences of my life. Although my group has only been in Florence, Italy for about a week, the friendships that we have been able to form make it feel as though we’ve known each other for longer. This program has also allowed me to gain an understanding of a new culture by presenting me opportunities to communicate with locals and taste the unique cuisine. One of my favorite parts of being abroad thus far is simply wandering around the city with members of my group. It is the best way to stumble upon amazing restaurants, shops, and picture-worthy scenery. Another amazing experience that I’ve had while in Florence is the live music. Almost every night a new performer is playing music in the square near our hotel. I can’t wait for the experiences and the joy that these next two weeks will bring.

The Ponte Vecchio is a bridge in Florence that has numerous shops located on top.
The Duomo is a Cathedral from the 1400s. It has a great lookout spot on top of the highest dome that allows you to see the whole city.
