Italy: Experiencing a Multitude of Cultures

Submitted by Carly Coulombe on the 2022 winter session program in Italy sponsored by the College of Health Sciences…

This weekend, in my downtime from shadowing in the hospitals, my group and I toured the Duino Castle, which still remains after being built in the 14th century. Upon being led through this magnificent structure by a tour guide, we learned how multiple generations of different cultures all came together to form the family history that lay within the stone walls of this castle. German, Italian, French, Russian, and even American heritages all melt down to house the family that still lives in the castle today! After soaking up the magnificent views of the shore from the castle balcony, we hiked to Aurisina Village and ate at a family-owned farm restaurant called Agriturismo Usaj. We were served fresh meals made with locally and self grown ingredients, from meats to veggies! Overall, this weekend was full of experiences and learning, and I cannot wait to further immerse myself in other cultures in my remaining time here in Italy!
