Italy: Challenges

Submitted by Lara Wood on the 2022 spring semester program in Rome, Italy…

It has almost been one week since my first day in Rome. Time is already flying by! This first week I had the opportunity to visit the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and the Colosseum. Along with this, I got to enjoy delicious meals and tasty treats from Rome’s local restaurants. In my short time here, I have been amazed by the kindness I have received from strangers. Whether it was being given free bread at dinner, enthusiastic attitudes from store owners or helpful tips for traveling, I have felt rather welcomed.

While I am already falling in love with the city, this first week has exposed me to some of the challenges I will have to overcome during my study abroad. With so many of the locals not being able to speak English, I have begun to feel rude not having worked harder to learn their language in advance. This is something that I immediately knew I wanted and needed to work harder on. With consistent practice, finding courage to ask questions, and inserting myself into conversations, I am confident that I can soon pick up Italian. Another challenge that I know many others will be facing as well is missing my family. Mornings and nights can be hard due to the time difference, but it is important to me to continue to find time to communicate with loved ones. Though this feels tough right now, my family and friends are incredibly encouraging and excited for me and my next four months abroad!
