Hawaii: Diamond Head

Submitted by Megan Reilly on the 2022 winter session program in Hawaii sponsored by the College of Health Sciences…

This week, I was able to further explore the island of Oahu. The entire Health in Hawaii program watched the sunrise from the top of the Diamond Head Crater. While the hike was steep and difficult at times, the view at the top was definitely worth the effort! It made the experience even more worthwhile by having my peers and new friends alongside me. Through this hike, I was able to learn more about the island’s history and geography. Diamond Head is an extinct volcanic crater and gained its significance as an ancient ceremonial structure dedicated to the war god. It was once considered a sacred landmark in which human sacrifices were offered. Hiking is one form of physical activity that I have been trying to engage in while in Hawaii in order to stay active while still being outdoors and exploring the island at the same time!
