Greece: Happy to be in Athens

Submitted by Sophia Kayatta on the 2022 winter session program in Greece sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures…

Only being in Athens for a few days, I have experienced so much already. First, the Greek citizens are so nice and welcoming – they make me feel comfortable and are always willing to answer my questions! Second, I had culture shock at the difference in meal-times. For example, it is common for me to have dinner around 6:30 pm at the University of Delaware; but here, dinner is usually eaten around 9:00 pm. Third, I did not expect French fries to be customary at dinner time as one of the few courses served – that was a nice treat and it reminded me of home! Last, the sites are just incredible; I visited the Acropolis and was astonished at the beauty and history of it! It is insane to me that it is mostly still there and in good condition!

I cannot say enough how happy I am to be in Athens, Greece. Studying abroad in Greece is such an opportunity of a lifetime and I am grateful to be here. Dr. Tyson is amazing, of course, and such a pleasure to be with. He is absolutely so knowledgeable about everything Greek and just so happy to be here. He really does so much work for our program and I cannot emphasize enough how perfect he is for the program!

Orange trees, which was not expected at all. However, the oranges cannot be eaten right off the tree because they are not ripe enough and cannot be absorbed well by the human body.

A line of palm trees, which was also surprising and unexpected. Granted, I did not know what to expect, but palm trees were not in my imagination for Greece.
