Portugal: Visiting Sintra

Submitted by Megan Dolan on the 2020 winter session program in Portugal sponsored by the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and College of Arts and Sciences…

For one of our group excursions, we visited Sintra, which is just west of Lisbon. It is a beautiful, historic town located within the Sintra Mountains, known for some of the most exquisite palaces and castles. While in Sintra, we visited the Palace of Pena, which used to be the summer home of the Royal Family. Its bright colors, intricate architecture and fairy tale landscape make it one of the most popular attractions. We were able to tour the inside, which has been restored to resemble the interior when the palace was still in use by the King. After the tour of the castle, we went back downtown and had the famous pastry of Sintra, travesseiro de Sintra. This excursion was definitely my favorite from the program and I cannot wait to be able to visit Sintra again one day.
