Greek New Year

Submitted by Alexis Garhart on the 2020 winter session study abroad program in Athens, Greece sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures…

We were lucky enough to be in Greece for their New Year celebration. One tradition for the Greek New Year includes hiding a coin in a cake. The person who finds the coin in the cake will have luck for the new year. The Athens Centre, or the institution that has housed our classes and our apartments, hosted a celebration where we as students got to take part in this tradition. I was really excited to immerse myself into this authentic tradition. I believe I have learned so much about Greece and its people.
