Greece: End of a Chapter

Submitted by Cameron Johnson on the 2020 winter session study abroad program in Athens, Greece sponsored by the Department of  English…

I can’t believe that my three weeks in Greece are coming to an end, and I only have a couple of days left with my group. I have made so many memories and friends on my journey and I am feeling slightly emotional that our time here is ending. Never in a million years would I think that in such a short amount of time, my class and members from the other class would be as close as we are, but we have laughed together, cried together and it truly feels like a family. Our final excursion during our time here awarded us with the opportunity to visit the island Aegina. Aegina is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece and is only a quick ferry ride from Athens. This was also my first time on a ferry which was exciting! During our time in Aegina, we were able to visit the Temple of Aphaia, the Kolona site and museums.

Additionally, after seeing some of these magnificent sites, we had the opportunity to have a free afternoon which allowed us the chance to explore Aegina more. It is a beautiful island with crystal blue water and friendly residents. A group of my friends and I had the opportunity to rent an ATV which made the experience 100 times better. We were able to drive out to the coast, and it truly felt like an out of body experience. Driving around with the wind in your hair while looking at gorgeous scenery is truly living your best life and I am beyond blessed.

While spending time with my friends on our day trip, I also did some serious self-reflecting. I began to realize that I have never felt more free and alive than I did during these three weeks. I feel at home here and I feel like know my way around now. Going out with friends to different sites, dinners, bars, etc. has allowed me to gain a deeper level of independence that I never knew I needed. I have always been an independent person, but this program has allowed me a new level of self-growth and I couldn’t be more thankful.

Even though I am sad that my time here in Athens ends in a few days, I am so thankful for the lasting memories and friendships that have formed on this program. I am in awe of this beautiful country and the people who live in it.

I hope that I can come back again soon!
