England: Advertising Agencies

Submitted by Michaela Matteo on the 2020 winter session study abroad program in London, England sponsored by the Department of Communication…

As the time is starting to dwindle down, I have realized a lot about my future from the advertising and public relations agencies we have been visiting. I have learned that most of what they are looking for in these markets are those that are interested in the company and are willing to immerse themselves into a work space and really give it their all. With that being said, it definitely took a lot of pressure off of me as I begin to think about internships and what I want to do because I’ve been extremely nervous about not having the exact answers or knowing everything about a certain profession when I go to apply. It was really interesting to see how the British companies work because their workforce and laws are “safer” than those in America. For example, they provide around three months notice if someone is being fired compared to two weeks. This more laid back atmosphere made it a lot easier to learn more and feel more comfortable in the offices asking questions.
