South Africa: Life Changing

Submitted by Brianna Wolfle on the 2020 winter session program in South Africa sponsored by the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition…

Since my last post, we’ve done a plethora of amazing activities. Here in South Africa, we’ve done high ropes courses, a five day safari, hiked, seen community health centers all over, hiked through caves, and learned more about the cradle of human kind! I’ve enjoyed all of these activities immensely. While I’ve been here, I’ve noticed so many differences in the culture. Here in South Africa, they say Ubuntu. Which means I am because we are. South Africa as a whole lives by this. They support each other, act as a family, and are so selfless. At one of the community health programs I attended, I met a woman who dedicated her life to helping young rape survivors.  While talking to her, I complimented her earrings and she tried to give me them. She was someone who dedicated their whole life to others and still trying to give more. This amazed me. This is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I also learned a lot of safari. It saddened me to hear so many stories of the rhino poaching. I want to work to help avoid this issue. Overall, so far this program has been life changing.
