New Zealand: Waiheke Island

Submitted by Eric Pedernera on the 2020 winter session program in New Zealand sponsored by the Department of  Communication…

When I first arrived in New Zealand, and more specifically Auckland, I wasn’t sure what to expect. One thing I did notice however was the almost overwhelming amount of greenery all around; on the sides of buildings, in large public parks, and mostly under our feet. While Auckland is a beautiful city, and cleaner than any found in the United States, it’s probably the least interesting part of all New Zealand. That’s why when we finally got out of the city and visited Waiheke Island, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Auckland, I really got to see what New Zealand was about. The views from Waiheke Island were breathtaking and absolutely stunning and really put into perspective all the worries and anxiety I had before and after getting off the plane. Seeing New Zealand’s natural beauty in person melted all my troubles away and made me especially appreciative of the opportunity I have being here.
