New Zealand: Serious about Protecting the Environment

Submitted by Jonathan Gardner on the 2020 winter session study abroad program in Australia and New Zealand sponsored by the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Finance…

The first thing I noticed when we arrived in Auckland was how clean everything was. It was rare to see a piece of trash on the street and it basically felt like you could eat food off the street. As time progressed, I learned how ecologically friendly and conscious Kiwis are. The government takes extensive measures to protect the environment. For example, in Rotorua by our hotel there was a small beach in which it was mating season for the seagulls. If a person were to be caught stepping on the beach, they would face a $100,000 fine and a minimum of two years in jail. This goes to show why New Zealand is able to maintain its gorgeous plants and keep such a healthy environment.
