Hawaii: From Palaces to Petroglyphs

Submitted by Mackenzie Short on the 2020 winter session study abroad program in Hawaii sponsored by College of Education and Human Development…

Week three in Hawaii was nothing short of amazing. Some of my favorite things included visiting Iolani Palace, traveling to the Big Island, and hiking Volcanoes National Park. Iolani Palace is the only official state residence of royalty in the United States. While on a tour of the Palace, I learned about Hawaiian royalty and the history of various kings and queens. I was also able to see the Palace in pristine condition with most of the original furniture still inside. Traveling to the Big Island was another highlight. I am grateful for the opportunity to see two different Hawaiian Islands. Each has its own slightly different culture while still remaining very similar. While on the Big Island my study abroad group visited Volcanoes National Park. This was the first national park I have ever been to so I was super excited. I saw sulfur steam vents, an active volcano, and hardened lava. Another thing I was able to see was ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs. This week has allowed me to further explore not only Oahu, but also the Big Island which has allowed me to immerse myself fully into the culture and history of Hawaii.
