Submitted by Desirae Howard on the 2019 summer session program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition…
It is my first week in Italy and I have never been so excited. Being from a single parent household, vacations were never really an option due to cost. With my IGS scholarship, I was able to study abroad in Italy for the Nutrition micro program. This is my third day in Italy, and I can say it is different than what I expected. When I arrived, I had to get used to the six hour time difference. The first night I arrived, I was wide awake, now on day three, I am getting adjusted to the time difference. One major thing that I noticed in Italy is that the people of Tuscany take pride in their artwork, appearance and their land. All around the city, you see trash cans on every corner and recycle bins. The city is beautiful and there is no trash anywhere! Unlike in the United States where people litter and don’t keep their cities clean. A major culture shock for me is their sense of style and professionalism. Everyday we have to dress up in business professional clothing, while I am used to wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Thanks to the University of Delaware and the IGS program I am able to enjoy Rome, Tuscany and Florence and study nutrition while I do so.
