Italy: Dress Nicely

Submitted by Rachel Samson on the 2019 summer session program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition…

Good morning Italy! Today is the third day in Italy and I am absolutely thriving. I woke up this morning at 7:30. I don’t know how I did it since I didn’t end up going to bed until like 2:00 AM. I don’t even feel that tired which is the crazy part. Breakfast today was a funky looking piece of bread, jam, walnuts, and fresh fruit. We have class today, but I honestly forgot I am even here to take a class in the first place.

The culture here is so different yet similar at the same time. People genuinely are very kind and do their best to help if you get lost of just have a question. Even with the obvious language barrier, they do their best to help which makes me very happy to be here. Everyone has been so welcoming and warm. The town we are staying by, Volterra, is a very small city that has a very big spirit. There used to be an art school there so many of the residents are working on their art and selling it in shops around the city. The difference is that people are dressed nicely everywhere you go. You don’t see people in sweatpants and flip- flops. Everyone looks so put together it makes me want to be put together. Overall, my first few days have been filled with fun, sun, and a LOT of pasta!!
