Washington, D.C.: Formal and Expensive

Submitted by Maxwell Lasher on the 2019 spring semester program in Washington, D.C. …

My first week in Washington, D.C. has been an unbelievable experience. It has been the most formal and professional atmosphere I have ever taken in. The city life, even after just one week, has left the obvious impression that it is drastically different from Budapest, Hungary where I spent the winter session studying.  I am finding sophistication and intelligence at every turn. It has absolutely blown my mind. I am currently taking the metro from Capital south station to McPherson station every day which takes from 20-40 minutes.

Everyone else is working on the Hill, I believe. I have just learned that there are two buses, yellow and red, that will take you from K street (near where I work) and Union Station (which is in Capital South), that are free for the month of February. So, I may do some exploring to discover that method of transportation. Everything in the city is unbelievably expensive, especially compared to Budapest, Hungary. The difference is strikingly different, cost wise, but also culture wise.

In Hungary, people take their time to meet because it is their culture. In DC, just like in many areas in the USA, time is money and it mustn’t be wasted. I am blown away by the architecture, as we are living right across from the Library of Congress, Shakespeare Library, and the Congressional buildings.
