Volcanoes In Hawaii

Submitted by Taylor Kligerman on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Hawaii sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and the School of Education…

This week in Hawaii, we moved over to the Big Island. Here on the Big Island, there are two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. At Volcanoes National Park, we were taken on a guided tour that lead us to a lookout of the Kilauea Crater. As we traveled to the lookout, we passed numerous sulfur vents and learned about how the Hawaiian rain-forest came to be. Once we got to the volcano, it was crazy to find out it does not look like the typical volcano most people picture. Kilauea is actually a shield volcano and is not a cone as expected. It was really cool to see that not all volcanoes look like what you see on television.
