Learning About Hawaiian Traditions

Submitted by Jacqueline Shand on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Hawaii sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and the School of Education…

I wanted to take the time to reflect on the visit I had to the Polynesian Cultural Center this past week. During this group visit, I learned how each island contributed to the Polynesian Triangle. Each culture had something unique to offer to in order to create a unique union of various islands. I had the opportunity to learn more about the language, traditions, dances, and customs of each island. This gave me a better understanding of Hawaiian culture and gave me an appreciation for each island’s diversity.
