Florence, Italy: Reflecting Beauty Through Art

Submitted by Kimberly Ortega on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Art…

I continue to wake up every day of this progam astounded by the reality that I am living in such a gorgeous city. This week consisted of extensive drawing and reflections in the Medici Chapel, The Pitti Palace, and the Duomo Museum. I love seeing the progress I have made with my drawings in the short time I’ve been here. I’m no Leonardo, but I am challenging myself to use the lessons we are given to pick up on the different planes and values of the subject. I have spent a bit of time sketching in coffee shops as well and I find it to be the most relaxing parts of my week. I hope to continue using the skills I have picked up to see the beauty in my surroundings and reflect on them through art.
