A Changed Perspective In New Zealand

Submitted by Bridget Horgan on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in New Zealand sponsored by the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition…

This week, I got pushed past my limits and had the chance to completely break out of my comfort zone. My program had the incredible opportunity to complete one of New Zealand’s great walks, the Kepler Track. From the get go, I was definitely anxious about backpacking for three days and how capable I would be, but I knew it would be a once in a lifetime experience. I didn’t realize just how much this experience would teach me. I learned how truly capable I am of anything I set my mind to. While hiking on a ridge over 3,000 feet up in a rain, hail, snow, and over 100 km/hr wind storm, I was tested physically and mentally. I had to push past my fears and think of the end goal. Once I gained that confidence and believed in myself and my abilities, the experience was completely turned around.

I also learned more about the importance of teamwork. When faced with a difficult situation like this, it’s so important to have people there for help and encouragement. It was so amazing to me how a group of college students who had met just less than a month ago came together to tackle what was most likely the most challenging thing most of us had ever done. Lastly, I also learned more about appreciating the world around me and taking in every minute more than I had ever before. Even in the dead of the storm, there were times that I was absolutely stunned by the beauty that was around me. I was lucky enough to have had the chance to see the most stunning views I had ever seen in my entire life.  I just wanted to stay there forever and take it all in. Because of the storm that wasn’t exactly possible, but I’m still so appreciative of and amazed by all the beauty I saw this day. The Kepler Track changed my perspectives. I know I can accomplish anything I truly try to and these views are definitely sweeter with friends by your side who helped you accomplish making it to them.

The unreal view from the ridge or “the calm after the storm.” Our group was split in two and the second half was lucky enough to avoid the storm and were able to take these stunning photos showing the true beauty of these views.
