London, England: Brilliant!

Submitted by Ariel Hannum on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in London, England sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering…

In my first few days of being in London walking through the city, I find myself navigating both the familiar and unfamiliar. Knowing which way to cross the street is very important! They drive on the left, measure using the metric system, and use unfamiliar everyday expressions.  Fries are chips, chips are crisps, gas is petrol, sneakers are trainers, sweaters are jumpers and cookies are biscuits.  ‘Posh’ is fancy, ‘knackered’ is exhausted, ‘gobsmacked’ is surprised, ‘gutted’ is saddened and ‘brilliant’ is wonderful. As I explore my new home – visiting museums, venturing on the Underground, and touring Windsor Castle – I have observed how diverse the city is. I will be spending the next month in a melting pot. I am very excited to experience all London has to offer – variety of cultures, history, art, architectural landmarks, and traditions.

One of my classes is Digital Imaging and Photography allowing my classmates and me to visually capture our experiences while discovering a new city. Several of the photos I have included are part of my experimentation with using my camera. I can’t wait for what I will learn in my classes in the upcoming weeks. Cheers!
