In Love With Italy

Submitted by Taylor McCormack on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Italy sponsored by the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science and the Department of English…

After only a week in Italy, I am completely in love with the country, its people, the culture, the history, and of course the food. What I am learning is that Italy has so much to offer, and while it is impossible to see it all in just a month, I am lucky to have the opportunity to see so much. Our journey started at Pompeii. In Pompeii, I felt as if I was in a past life. Here I learned how smart and advanced the Roman people were. From the way they built their city, to the way that they lived their lives, the artifacts and knowledge that has been discovered since the eruption of Mount Vesuvius are unbelievable.

From Pompeii, we headed to the coastal town in the south of Italy known as Sorrento. My experiences in Sorrento are some that I will never forget. There was beauty in everything, from the homemade pasta served at meals to the breathtaking views from the cliffs. From Sorrento, our group had the opportunity to travel to Naples, Capri and Amalfi. The experience I had in Naples was unlike anything I had ever seen before. Our tour of the underground city was filled with decades of history and knowledge.  The crystal-clear water surrounding the island of Capri was beautiful. My experience here can’t even be described or illustrated in a picture. From the buildings, the food, to the boats, local people and their shops I could have stayed there forever. Words can’t describe the beauty of the Amalfi Coast. The colorful buildings and winding roads made it impossible for anyone to look away.

I am excited for the rest of my adventures here in Italy and all the wonderful things that that each different place has to offer.
