Submitted by Jessica Casino on the 2019 winter session study abroad program in Australia and New Zealand sponsored by the Department of Business Administration…
As I currently write this, I am reflecting on my valuable time in Auckland, New Zealand. My study abroad program which focuses on international marketing, management, and operations management has departed from New Zealand and is currently in Sydney, Australia. The places that I traveled to in New Zealand included Piha Beach, Devonport, Rotorua, and Waiheke.
Every day in New Zealand felt like the best day of my life due to the sheer beauty and culture of this beautiful country. At Piha Beach, I was able to climb Lion Rock and lay on the black sand beach. Also, I was able to go on a hike through the rain forest to KiteKite Falls which was the most beautiful waterfall I have ever seen. I was able to swim underneath the waterfall and it was an incredible experience.
I journeyed to Devonport twice while in New Zealand. The town was charming and picturesque. I hiked to the top of Mount Victoria and was able to view the skyline of Auckland, Ringatoto, and Waiheke. Additionally, I was able to go on a walk on the beach and discovered a cove that was inhabited by natural vegetation and birds.
Rotorua was a weekend excursion that I went to with my program. I went to Hobbiton which is where the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit films were filmed. Also, I went to natural hot springs and waded into 105 degree geothermal pools. Then, I went to a Maori village which is the native people of New Zealand. I was able to learn about the culture, practice the Haka, and eat an authentic Hangi meal.
Waiheke Island was one of the best days of my life. I took a forty-five-minute ferry to the island and upon arrival, I saw a stingray in the water which was amazing. The rest of my day was spent on the beach and exploring the island with a group of my classmates. Waiheke Island has my heart and I will forever remember how perfect that day truly was.
Thus far on my program, I am learning an immense amount of information through experiences and interactions with locals. In particular, I am learning about cultural differences among Americans and the countries that I am visiting, and I am learning about the way in which business is conducted internationally. The opportunity to study abroad is life changing and I am taking advantage of every minute spent here to learn and expose myself to new and exciting things.
